On the Water

Miami yacht day:
the beginner's guide.

How to book without getting ripped off. Plus what to bring, where to launch, and how to find a great +1.

Yacht days are the most Miami thing you can do. They are also wildly inconsistent in price and quality. Here is the cheat sheet so your first one is great instead of a $1,500 disappointment.

The two ways to do it

1. Charter a private boat

You rent the whole boat, with or without crew. Costs $400 to $1,500 for a half day depending on the boat size. Split four ways, it is reasonable. Apps: Click&Boat, GetMyBoat, Boatsetter. Always check captain reviews and check what is included (gas, captain tip, cleaning fee - these add 25 to 40 percent).

2. Join a shared cruise

You buy a single seat on a boat someone else organized. $80 to $200 per person. Cheaper, more social, less control. Boatpass is the dominant marketplace in Miami.

The marinas to know

  • Sunset Harbour Marina (South Beach): The most popular launch. Closest to the Star Island loop.
  • Miami Beach Marina (Government Cut): Big boats, deeper water. Where you start if you want to cross to Key Biscayne.
  • Dinner Key Marina (Coconut Grove): Quieter, more local. Great for half-day cruises around Stiltsville.
  • Bayside Marina (Downtown): Easy parking, mid-tier boats, often the best value.

What to bring

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (mandatory in some parks)
  • Cooler with ice, water, and whatever you want to drink
  • A speaker (not waterproof, you will lose it)
  • A towel - boats rarely supply enough
  • Cash for the captain tip (15 to 20 percent of the rental)
  • A swimsuit you can actually swim in

The classic Miami route

Launch from Sunset Harbour at 11 a.m. Slow cruise past Star and Hibiscus Islands. Anchor at the sandbar (Haulover or Nixon Sandbar) for swim/lunch. Late-afternoon cruise back through Biscayne Bay timed to hit golden hour over Downtown. Back at the dock by 6 p.m.

Finding a +1 for your boat day

Posting "extra seat on a yacht cruise Sat 11am South Beach" on Plus 1 is one of the most-requested plan types we see. Members who join boats tend to be flexible, social, and verified. The matching ratio is high.

What to avoid

  • Booking party yachts on Instagram. Many are unlicensed. Stick to reviewed marketplaces.
  • Underestimating the sun. The reflection off the water doubles your burn.
  • Bringing glass. Most boats don't allow it.

Post your yacht day.
